What education is required to be a medical assistant

Medical assisting is an in-demand career that offers aspiring healthcare professionals the opportunity to provide vital support and services to medical offices, clinics, and hospitals. Due to the vast responsibilities involved with becoming a medical assistant, a specific education and training path must be taken in order to become certified in the position.

The first step in pursuing a career as a medical assistant is obtaining an associate degree in Medical Assisting. This typically takes two years and prepares students with the necessary knowledge and skills to begin their careers. Coursework usually includes anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, office management and protocols, patient care instruction, pharmacology, laboratory procedures, professional ethics and more.

In addition to classroom education, medical assistants also have to complete supervised clinical internships that provide hands-on training opportunities with actual patients. These internships give future medical assistants experience working in a healthcare setting with real healthcare providers under direct supervision and guidance. This not only helps future professionals gain more confidence in their skills but also provides them with invaluable knowledge for when they start their own careers as a medical assistant.

Upon completing the courses throughout their medical assisting degree program and successfully passing their initial internship experience(s), the student can then sit for either of the two national certification exams: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA). While each state may have different requirements on whether or not having certification is necessary for work as a medical assistant – having certification offers one an edge over non-certified job candidates – as it validates one's knowledge of the job's technical tasks such as: data administration, changing dressings on wounds/bandaging injured limbs; giving injections; helping speciman collection; charting vital signs & documenting patient records; schedule appointments & operating computers & office machines…etc.. It is recommended by many employers that potential medics obtain certifications due to its validity of one's skills & competencies regarding general medical admin work.
